A dance show with a difference comes to Dronfield’s Peel Centre venue on Friday November 10 as the highly acclaimed Uchenna Dance company takes to the stage with a performance called Head Wrap Diaries.
Regarded as a tour de force within the UK dance sector, Uchenna ‘s hugely uplifting hair-salon set dance-theatre show explores beauty, hair and culture. Weaving good humoured storytelling with beautifully physical African traditional and contemporary dance, it is set to a sizzling soundtrack of R’n’B and Ghanaian pop music.
The fun, noisy, colourful show, currently on a national tour, will transform’s Dronfield Peel Centre venue into a hair salon, and fill it with irresistibly funky music in a performance designed for adults and older children.
Say Uchenna’s performers: “It’s a great chance to learn about the huge commitments in looking after afro hair but it’s also a celebration of the way all of us put huge effort into our hair care wherever in the world we live. Anyone who sees the show will recognise the Mum pretty much pulling out the hair of the child trying to tame it, the immaculate picture-perfect Instagram generation getting ready for their selfie and the grannies who are really there to catch up on gossip.
“There’s also the world-wide similarities of what happens at the hairdresser’s: the weird ‘rituals’ of placing yourself completely in someone’s mercy, the strange chats you have, the salon scandals, and that terrifying stylist you daren’t disagree with even if they’ve ruined your hair!
