Natural Dyes Workshop with Dee Sayce

Natural dyes can be used to create colourful fabric, fleece and fibre. There is evidence of humans using natural dyes for thousands of years. These dyes can be produced from a range of plant material including leaves, flowers, roots and tree bark

In this workshop w use tried and tested natural dye techniques to colour cotton fabric and wool. We will make natural dyes by soaking and then boiling large pots of plant material, strain the plant matter out, then simmer to transfer the dye on to the fibres. Making use of iron and alum as mordants will increase the colour range and to make the dye fix on to the fibre. Producing a colourful sample swatch from the results of the dye pots, for you to keep as a record of the dye process

The aim of this workshop is for you to gain the skills and knowledge to make and use natural dyes and to acquire the confidence to do this independently

All equipment and materials are supplied. You are welcome to bring a small amount of white clean fabric, yarn or fleece to add to the dye vat. Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy and/or bring an apron

This workshop is suitable for all abilities
